Have You Tried Green Eggs and Ham?
My son is really into green eggs and ham. No- not eating it, he loves the Dr. Suess story. For the past few weeks he has had me read it to him every night at bedtime. As a refresher for those not familiar with the story it goes like this;
A pretty grumpy guy is endlessly nagged by little guy named Sam who wants him to try green eggs and ham. Finally at the end of the book after being pestered through tunnels, trains, boats, ect, the grumpy guy finally gives in and tries it just so Sam will stop bugging him. And then to his surprise he ends up loving the green eggs and ham. The grumpy guy becomes happy and thanks Sam for changing his life by having him try green eggs and ham.
Oh if life were only that simple, right? Just eat the green eggs and ham and everything will be happily ever after.
One of my favorite parts about being a mom so far has been the opportunity to reread all my favorite children’s books again as an adult. I get to look at a classic story like Green Eggs and Ham with a completely different perspective. It’s a good reminder for ourselves of how much we really like to avoid uncomfortable things most of the time. Ok, ALL of the time.
I have to admit that I’ve been that grumpy guy on several occasions (or more).
Resisting over and over again that nagging little voice.
I used to think this story’s message was the whole “try something new” message. Because even though you think you won’t like something, you might just be surprised.
And while I believe that’s a good message, I think there is so much more to it.
Sam is not some outside person (like me) nagging us to do something. He is not our mother, our teacher, our doctor, or our personal trainer…
Sam is our true voice. He is our inner voice
Sam is the voice inside us that we don’t want to listen to because what this voice is telling us to do scares the crap out of us.
Earlier this week I ate some green eggs and ham that have been sitting out in front of me for a while now. I went to a boot camp/sub-crossfit class. There were so many reasons why I was scared to go. I was scared of hurting my neck, my back, my shoulders (well, you get the idea) but the biggest fear was that I would make a fool out of myself. Yes. The person that has been in the fitness industry for well over a decade was scared to go to a fitness class. A few clients had been asking me to go for a while and my “Sam” said that I should go try it because it is out of my comfort zone and if there is anything I have learned about comfort zones over the years is that it’s a place where growth ceases to exist.
So I decided to give in, eat my green eggs and ham and go despite my fear of making a fool out of myself.
I learned 2 things that morning:
Turns out, I’m in pretty good shape because I didn’t hurt myself
Boot camps are way cool and I actually had a lot of fun.
So with this first full week of 2015 coming to an end and so many challenges and goals at stake for most of us, my question for you is this:
What is your “Sam” nagging you to do? It’s easy to pick the goals and resolutions that are socially acceptable because they aren’t as scary to focus on, but if you really listened to your inner voice, what would it really be nagging you to do?
Here are three questions that might help:
Will this thing I am being “nagged” to do make me feel really uncomfortable and kind of scared?
Am I scared that I might look like a complete fool if I do this thing?
If I do this thing will I be completely relieved when it’s over and is it highly possible that a positive outcome to this might benefit me tremendously?
If you answered yes to all these 3, then chances are your Sam is speaking loud and clear and it's time to those eat those green eggs and ham.
